Gradačac Fortress is the seat of Husein-kapetan Gradaščević, known as the "Dragon of Bosnia" (Zmaj od Bosne). In 1831 and 1832 he led Bosnian leaders in an uprising against the Ottoman sultan's reforms, demanding self-rule for Bosnia. The uprising failed, but he became one of the great heroes of Bosnian history. The fortress walls and its tall stone tower (about 22 meters, finished in the early 1800s) still dominate the town, with views over the plain of northern Bosnia.
