Tuzla's name comes from the Turkish word for salt, and the city sits on huge underground salt deposits. In the 2000s, the city turned this into an unusual attraction: the Pannonian Lakes, a complex of saltwater lakes with sandy beaches, waterfalls and cafés right in the city center. In summer they draw thousands of swimmers a day, many of them from across Bosnia, and the salty water is often compared to the sea.
