The Partisan Memorial Cemetery is one of the most important works of Yugoslav modernist architecture. It was designed by Bogdan Bogdanović and opened in 1965 to honor the partisan fighters from Mostar who died in the Second World War. Stone terraces, paths and water channels climb a hillside like a small imaginary city, with gravestones shaped like flowers. It is a protected National Monument, but it has been badly neglected and repeatedly vandalized in recent years, and restoration work is ongoing. Visitors interested in architecture or Yugoslav history still find it powerful.
