The National Museum (Zemaljski muzej) was founded in 1888, making it one of the oldest museums in the Balkans. It is housed in a set of Austro-Hungarian pavilions around a botanical garden. Its most famous treasure is the Sarajevo Haggadah, a 14th-century illuminated Jewish manuscript from Spain. Museum staff hid it from the Nazis in WWII and saved it again during the siege of the 1990s.
The museum also has archaeology, ethnography and natural history collections, plus a garden of medieval stećci tombstones.
