Why visit Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial?
In July 1995, Bosnian Serb forces overran Srebrenica, a town that the United Nations had declared a "safe area." In the days that followed, more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were killed. It was the worst mass killing in Europe since the Second World War, and international courts, including the International Court of Justice, have ruled that it was genocide.
The Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial and Cemetery opened in 2003 at Potočari, just outside Srebrenica. More than 6,500 victims identified so far are buried there, in rows of white headstones. Every year on 11 July, families gather to bury newly identified remains.
