Why visit Herzegovina Wine Route?

Herzegovina has made wine since Roman times, and its sunny, stony land is some of the best wine country in the Balkans. The Herzegovina Wine Route starts in Mostar and links more than 30 wineries, from small family cellars to large modern estates. Most are less than an hour from Mostar, so wine is easy to add to any trip to the region.

The grapes

  • Žilavka (white): The signature grape of Herzegovina. Fresh, mineral and a little nutty. It was reportedly a favorite of the Austro-Hungarian emperors.
  • Blatina (red): A soft, fruity red that only grows here. It is hard to grow because its flowers cannot pollinate themselves.
  • Vranac (red): A deep, strong red, especially good around Trebinje.

Where to go

  • Around Čitluk and Međugorje: The biggest cluster of wineries, including old family estates (see Međugorje).
  • Around Mostar and Blagaj: Easy to combine with Stari Most and the Blagaj Tekke.
  • Near Ljubuški and Kravica: Combine a tasting with the waterfalls.
  • Trebinje: The second main wine area, with the Tvrdoš Monastery cellar, which has made wine for centuries, and large modern estates (see Trebinje).
