Why visit Jajce Fortress and Old Town?
Jajce was the last royal seat of the medieval Kingdom of Bosnia. Its fortress sits on the hill above the Pliva Waterfall, surrounded by old walls, towers and stone houses. In 1463 the Ottomans conquered Bosnia, and the last Bosnian king, Stjepan Tomašević, was captured and executed. Nearly five centuries later, in 1943, Jajce was where the foundations of Tito's Yugoslavia were laid.
Few small towns hold this much history in so little space.
Things to do
- The fortress: Walls and towers from the 14th and 15th centuries, with a carved royal coat of arms over the entrance gate and views over the town and both rivers.
- The catacombs: An underground church and tomb carved into the rock around 1400 for Duke Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić, one of the most powerful nobles of medieval Bosnia.
- The Temple of Mithras: A Roman shrine from about the 4th century, with a carved relief of the god Mithras. It was found by accident when a house was being built.
- AVNOJ Museum: The hall where, on 29 November 1943, the partisans held the meeting that laid the foundations of the second Yugoslavia.
- The Franciscan monastery: Holds what are believed to be the remains of King Stjepan Tomašević.
