Why visit Počitelj?

Počitelj is a fortified village built into a steep hillside above the Neretva river. It started as a medieval Bosnian fortress in the 14th century and became an Ottoman town in 1471. Most of what you see today is from the Ottoman period: stone houses, stairways and a mosque, all inside the old walls and topped by a tower.

Since the 1960s it has been an artists' colony, and in summer women sell fresh pomegranate juice and figs from tables along the paths.

Things to do

• Hajji Alija Mosque: Built in 1562 to 1563, in the center of the village.
• Gavrankapetan Tower: The fortress tower at the top. A 20-minute climb up stone steps gives the best view of the Neretva valley.
• The madrasa, hammam and clock tower: Small Ottoman buildings along the walk up.
